THE threat of wild weather did not deter strong crowds turning out for the diverse fun-filled festivities of the 153rd Penola Show.

Hundreds of people were abuzz with excitement on Friday afternoon as they filed through the gates when the show officially opened at 4pm.

Organisers were impressed with competition entries, attendance numbers and the “kind” weather on Friday evening and Saturday.

Penola Pastoral Agriculture and Horticulture Society Show Committee secretary Kathy Fennell said everything fell into place, resulting in an outstanding show.

“It was just a terrific show, a lot depends on the weather and fortunately it held off and was kind to us over the weekend,” Ms Fennell said.

“We had great feedback from the community – people said all the displays and different sections were great.”

Attendance numbers were up on last year, which Ms Fennell said was a credit to the Penola community.

“Gate takings were up on Friday night and Saturday, which is obviously really pleasing,” she said.

“Penola is such a tight-knit community and we are one of the lucky smaller towns that still has a very strong show.”

Show highlights included the Mount Gambier Dog Obedience Club, the Epic Darren Motorbike Show, George the Farmer, Circus Elements and the popular fireworks display.

Ms Fennell said it was pleasing to look around and see the community enjoying all the different entertainment on offer.

“There was quite a strong crowd watching the evening’s entertainment on the oval on Friday night, which was great considering it looked like a thunderstorm was on the way,” she said.

“Our hall which contained different craft exhibits was also a big hit once again and it was just such a buzz to see the looks on different children’s faces when they saw a ribbon on their entries.”

Out of all the competitions and exhibits though, it was the Bloke’s Chocolate Cake contest that stole the show, with John Rymill edging out Tim Kidman for the most desirable cocoa treat.

“There has been a friendly rivalry developing over the years in the Bloke’s Chocolate Cake competition and this year was no exception,” Ms Fennell said.

“It was such a talking point that we’ve already had another sponsor come on board next year to raise the prize money.”

Ms Fennell was quick to thank everyone who contributed to make the 2017 Penola Show so successful.

“I have to thank all our volunteers who helped not only on the two days, but in the many months prior to get it all organised,” she said.

“Our show also couldn’t go ahead without the support of our sponsors and we thank them for their ongoing support.”

While this year’s event has come to an end, Ms Fennell said the committee will be back to the drawing board next month to prepare for the 154th Penola Show for 2018.
