REDMAN Wines made a big impression at the Rutherglen Wine Show, walking away with an exceptional five trophies for a distinctive 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2015 Last Row Shiraz.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, produced by brothers Bruce and Malcolm Redman, impressed the judges with its excellent flavour and varietal definition with rich fruit and young fresh tannins, aromas of dark berry fruit and overtones of oak.

The four trophies won included Best Australian Dry Red Wine 2016 and 2015, Best Australian Dry Red Wine, Best Table Wine Produced by a Small Winery and Best Australian Dry Red Table Wine of Show.

The fruit originated from vines that are more than 40 years old, carefully hand pruned on the Redman family vineyards in the heart of Coonawarra.

The 2015 Last Row Shiraz received the trophy for Best Australian Dry Red Wine and Shiraz 2015 Vintage and Older.

The shiraz grapes were sourced from 80-year-old hand-pruned vines and a screw cap closure was used, which was a first for the Redman family.

“I know the industry has been sold on screw caps for a while, however we have always been committed to a more traditional approach,” Mr Redman said.

“It’s a testament to the generational change we are undergoing as a family business and the decision to change closures was led by my son Dan.”

Dan Redman said it was a great honour to be taking over the reins of the business with his brother Mike after the winery’s beginning in 1966.

“Wine is a fickle thing, with tastes and styles changing in the market all the time, however there is always a place for great wine that reflects the land in which its grown,” he said.

“Coonawarra is our home and we will continue to make the wines that best represent the terra rossa soils the region is famous for.”

The winemaker said the family winery had entered the show many times with varying success, however this was the first time it had collected such an array of trophies.

“The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is regular cab produced off 40-year-old cabernet vines and 2015 was quite a warm year, which also helped production,” Mr Redman said.
