INSPIRING writers will have a chance to try a new style of writing with Sydney-based poet Gloria Demillo coming to the region.

The workshop, ‘Engaging the Senses’, will focus on enhancing mindfulness and meditation for attendees to engage the senses to help write their stories.

Performance work will also be highlighted during the three-hour workshop where attendees will learn breathing techniques, body movements, expression and how to use a microphone.

Being the first time in Mount Gambier, Gloria said the workshop would encourage others to learn a new avenue of writing and themselves.

“The workshop will use different techniques including meditation, performance warm ups and getting used to writing within themselves,” Gloria said.

“It is a big part of the learning process and allows them to start describing what they feel and how they feel it.”

Gloria said the workshop was based on personal writing experiences.

“When I was 16 or 17 and didn’t know how to express myself I started writing poetry which gave me a sense of community and connection,” Gloria said.

“I do hope that people who come along to the workshop are able to learn a new avenue about themselves and feel safe to do so and be creative while also enjoying that creativity.”

Gloria said the workshop, aimed at people under the age of 30, would be a safe space for people to come, write and share experiences.

“It can be for people who are skilled or beginning their writing journey which is great,” Gloria said.

The workshop will be held on March 5 with tickets on sale now on the Writers SA website.

The venue for the event is yet to be determined.
