A MOUNT Gambier Theatre Group production is preparing to transport South East residents back to the 70s, highlighting the laughter in everyday mishaps.

Comedy act Pride and Secrets will give the community a chance to let go and make fun of everyday mishaps.

Theatre group president, author and director Harley Austin said he drew inspiration for his comedy act Pride and Secrets from all-time comedy favourites which he missed seeing.

“While watching the gone-by TV comedies I noticed old-school characters would not get away with some of the same stuff now,” Mr Austin said.

“Behind the jokes were characters that were unlike anything seen today.

“Each character had characteristics of their own but now characters are all very similar.”

Banishing political correctness and sensibilities, Mr Austin said he wanted to create something without restriction which the audience can make fun of at any point in time.

“It is a performance inspired by some of the greatest comedians in history,” he said.

“It stars characters everyone can relate to and others you will find in your everyday life.

“This is a hysterical quick-witted, slapstick comedy guaranteed for laughs.”

Mr Austin said although the show has had many mishaps along the way, the cast have been “battlers” and have proven their resilience and strengths.

“I do not think I have been involved with a show with as many problems as this one,” he said.

“It has been cursed worse than MacBeth.

“Despite everything, all of the actors and actresses have worked well together and everything has turned out better than expected.”

With an exciting range of new production alterations and additions, the show will be something the theatre group has never done before.

Pride and Secrets will showcase at the Wehl Street Theatre on May 24, 25, 31 and June 1, starting at 7.30pm with tickets available at the door.
