THE Mount Gambier Combined Schools Band made its Generations in Jazz debut at the weekend.

Students from North Gambier Primary School and Mount Gambier High School formed the combined stage band and entered a new division for bands with odd instrumentation.

While the band featured typical stage band instruments, it also broke the mould with students playing violins, flutes, clarinets, a cello and tuba.

Performing a set piece, a ballad and a free-choice third piece, the band scored 218 of a possible 300 points – placing ninth ahead of 15 other bands in the division.

With 24 bands competing for the title, competition was tight and only seven points separated ninth and third place.

Year 11 student Dakota Trotter said experiencing the enormity of the competition had been inspiring.

“Being involved in Generations in Jazz and watching my friends perform has opened my eyes to the world of jazz,” she said.

“I am so proud of all the people who took part in the weekend and in the rehearsals beforehand.”

Mount Gambier High School arts coordinator Judith Kelly said she was proud to see her students perform on a big stage.

“It was a proud moment to see our students carry themselves with dignity and play so well,” she said.

“We watched other schools perform at an exceptional standard, which should provide plenty of inspiration.”

A highlight for students was seeing world-class jazz instrumentalists and singer Patti Austin perform.

“Our staff, parents and the wider school community are enormously proud of their efforts,” principal Chris Edmonds said.

“It was incredible to see the sense of excitement and pride in the students.

“This looks to be just the start of a journey where music and performance is a central part of ongoing excellence and opportunity at Mount Gambier High School.”
