State theatre acts secured

TOURING: The State Theatre Company’s production of The Secret River broke box office records in the 2017 season. The company will embark on its largest statewide touring program next year.

THE State Theatre Company will embark on its largest ever statewide touring program for its 2018 season.

The company will take its productions to 14 venues across South Australia, including Mount Gambier.

The upcoming season will be the company’s largest to date with two additional productions rounding out its highest number of commissioned works, with four of the nine productions set to premier in South Australia.

This follows a highly successful 2017 season which saw two box office records broken by The Secret River and 1984.

The national regional touring and engagement with Sista Girl and The Popular Mechanicals made for a successful year in show business.

Another success was the launch of the State Theatre Company’s Ensemble, which performed two shows back-to-back with Macbeth and A Doll’s House, which starred former Mount Gambier actor Rashidi Edward.

Next year, artistic director Geordie Brookman will explore belief as a core theme with many of the stories set in regional communities as the company renews its focus on South Australia.

“2018 represents another ambitious step in the company’s aspiration to deliver international class theatre all over South Australia, the country and the world,” he said.

“I’m delighted four out of our nine works come from our commissioning program, reaffirming our commitment to being one of the best new work companies in the country.”

The year will open with In The Club, the first of the State Theatre Company’s commissioned productions and an impactful start to the season.

Dates and venues will be announced later in the year.
