New archer tries his luck

A QUIETER Friday night indoor archery round for the Blue Lake Archers allowed the attending members to combine a competitive event with a coaching session for the club’s newest member.

A single Australian 18-metre round provided the backdrop for a coaching session that put Peter Donhardt on the path to his new venture into target archery.

After initial bow set up, checking of sight settings and coaching by Paul Freeman, a series of practice ends had Donhardt comfortable enough to have a crack at the 18-metre event.

The contest was not intended to be too serious and the score line produced a result a little more lopsided than normal.

Freeman and Graham Lock introduced their new club mate to the basics of competition and scoring throughout the event.

Freeman continued to provide coaching and late in the match the archers had short break to correct a loose sight and then re-sight Donhardt’s bow before completing the round.

Donhardt’s first scored event produced a respectable off-the-bow 212 points from a possible 300.

The competitive score also stepped him towards obtaining a handicap rating for future events.

Lock completed the night with the best off-the-bow score and handicap score to win the night by 13 points from Freeman.

Indoor archery continues at the Blue Lake Gymnastics Club, Malseed Park, Friday at 7.30pm followed by outdoor archery at Corriedale Park at 12.30pm Sunday.

Australian Indoor 18 metre, handicap scored, benchmark 300 points: Graham Lock 297 (off the bow 285); Paul Freeman 284 (272); Peter Donhardt 212 (off the bow only).
