New clubs work a treat

JACKETS, hats and layers of warm clothing were the order of the day to combat the challenging conditions last week at the Attamurra golf course due to the strong winds and freezing temperatures.

However, that did not deter 23 die-hard women who participated in the second round of the Hudson Plumbing Trophy.

Scores were generally lower than normal, with putting quite difficult on the fast greens.

A count-back was necessary and Andrea Pegler, who is enjoying her new clubs, was the winner with 31 points from Janina Morrison.

One shot further back was Faye Mainwaring who finished with 30 points to take the Madd Bites prize.

The pro shot on the eighth hole was challenging, with many women using a different club to what they normally use due to the strong southerly.

Heather Teakle judged it the best to claim the pro shot.

In A Grade, the second shot on the 10th hole was won by Helen McIntyre who finished 13-1/2 centimetres from the hole, while in B Grade, Morrison claimed the prize.

The monthly C Grade prize sponsored by Kathy Ewer was won by Heather Chapman.

Ball rundown winners were Ewer, Yvonne Shirley, Jan Shanahan and Di O’Donnell who needed 28 points or better to claim a ball.

Last Friday saw the first round of the home and away matches for the Peweena Shield against Naracoorte Golf Club played in perfect weather.

The inter-club exchange has been played for more than 80 years and the Mount Gambier women scored well, winning seven matches to one, with three other matches squared.

Several matches were close and could have gone either way.

Naracoorte willhost the return match in September.

Meanwhile, a field of 15 women played a stableford round on Saturday, including visitor Debra Bradley from Tea Tree Gully Golf Club.

Women’s captain Faye Mainwaring enjoyed the conditions to claim the winner’s prize with a score of 41 points.

Mainwaring scored 41/42 for an 83 off the stick, which included two birdies.

Carol Smith survived the four-way count-back to take the runner-up prize from Betty McKechnie, Carol Davis and Ewer, all with 36 points.
