Narrow win in strong field

A FIELD of 29 women contested the June monthly medal last week at the Attamura golf course in sunny, but cool conditions.

With half the field scoring in the nett 70s, competition was strong, but it was Betty McKechnie’s day when she returned to the clubhouse with nett 68 to claim the honours.

Playing off a 27 handicap, McKechnie turned after nine holes with 49 before completing the back nine with 46, which included a birdie on the last hole.

One shot further back was long hitter Heather Teakle who claimed the runner-up prize with 93 off the stick for nett 69.

Di Norman played exactly to her handicap to finish with a nett 73 and third place.

The putting competition sponsored by Janine Jenner was won by McKechnie, who had control of her putter with 29 putts, while the pro shot was won by Bernie Jennings on the eighth hole.

Big hitter Karen Forster won the second shot in A Grade on the 17th hole, Norman claimed the prize in B Grade and Vicki Clark was successful in C Grade.

Faye Mainwaring and Andrea Pegler, both nett 74, Carol Davis nett 75 and Bev Pedlar, Di O’Donnell and Clark, all nett 76 claimed a ball in the run down competition.

Meanwhile Saturday’s wintry conditions could only entice 11 women out to the course and the stroke round was won the by event sponsor, Marie Douglas with nett 79.

A par on the challenging 12th hole was her highlight for the day.

Runner-up was Mainwaring with nett 80.

O’Donnell won the putting competition with 31 putts in somewhat difficult conditions.

Ball run down winners were Helen McIntyre, O’Donnell, Penne Saffin, Jennings and Janina Morrison.

Sharran Waters was the successful pro shot winner on the eighth hole.
