A COMBINED competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club last week saw 16 pairs of women participate in the championship foursomes gross event, in conjunction with the state-run Shylie Rymill Foursomes nett event.

The cold conditions were compounded by the wind and the tricky pin placements, with scoring difficult and just one pair breaking 100 off the stick.

Captain Faye Mainwaring and Helen McIntyre did break the 100-mark with 97 off the stick to take out the club championship foursomes.

The pair had a good front nine of 43 off the stick, but found the going tough on the back nine, with 11 extra shots.

In second place on a count-back from Bernie Jennings and Karen Foster was the pairing of Kate McCormick and Denise Harvey, who registered 101 off the stick, with 53 on the front nine and 48 on the back.

The Shylie Rymill Foursomes went to Carol Smith and Pauline Patterson playing off a 28 handicap and carding a nett 78.

They played consistent golf, with 53 off both front and back nines.

McCormick and Harvey finished runners-up, down by just one shot, with a nett 79.

They played off a 22 handicap and had 53 on the front nine and a solid 48 on the back, which included four pars.

The ball run-down went to Jennette Braun/Marie Douglas and Mainwaring/McIntyre.

The novelty events were the pro shot on the eighth hole which went to Andrea Pegler, while the combined second shot on the first hole went to Forster and Jennings.

Meanwhile a small field of 12 competed in a stableford event on Saturday, with more pleasant weather resulting in good scores.

Sharran Waters recorded 37 points to claim the honours, with a consistent 19 points on the front nine and 18 on the back, which also included a birdie on the eighth hole.

Just one shot behind was Marie Douglas, carding 36 points, with 19 points on the front nine and 17 on the back.

Karen Forster was another shot further back with 35 points.

Forster was impressive on the front nine with 21 points, but fell away on the tough back nine with 14.

She also birdied the eighth hole.
