Top scores in opening round

ANDREA Peglar survived a count-back to claim Round 1 of the Hudson Plumbing stableford competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.

Run over four rounds, the opening day saw 37 women compete, with the best three of the four rounds counted towards the overall trophy.

Pegler put in a consistent performance, with 19 points on the front nine and 18 on the back for 37 points, with five three-point holes on her card.

In second place was the ever-consistent Jan Shanahan, who has featured on numerous occasions in the placings over the last two to three months.

Shanahan lost the count-back, despite scoring 20 points on the front nine, which included a four-point hole from a birdie on the eighth, but managed just 17 points on the difficult back nine.

Denise Harvey finished third with 34 points, with 15 on the front nine and 19 points on back, which included five three-point holes.

Maureen Sims claimed three balls for her pro shot on the eighth hole, while Marie Douglas won the Kathy Ewer prize of a Piccollo/Chocolates with her second shot on the eighth hole for B Grade.

The second shot on the 16th was won by Shanahan in A Grade and Heather Chapman for C Grade.

Meanwhile 18 ladies women played the Hope Bliss stableford event on Saturday.

The course was difficult with tricky placement of the pins on the greens, but it did not deter Gemma Winterborn who finished with 42 points.

Winterborn played consistently, with 21 points on the front and back nines.

Helen Gregory finished second with 34 points, while Bev Pedlar came in third on a count-back from Faye Mainwaring, both with 33 points.
