Championship heats up

THE 2020 Blue Lake Golf Club’s women’s handicap championships continued last week with quarter finals to decide semi-final positions, with a par competition for those not involved in the championships.

With the course looking a treat and and the good weather holding, there was plenty of run on the lush fairways.

In the par competition captain Helen Myers signed for 1-down to claim Division 1.

Her card included a birdie-two on the downhill par 3 fifth hole and pars on the 12th and 16th.

She stumbled a little with six wipes but redeemed herself with pluses and squares on the remaining holes.

Helen Stratford had to settle for the runner-up voucher, carding 3-down after having seven wipes.

She gained pluses from pars on the fourth, ninth, 13th and 17th holes, squaring the rest.

A count-back was required in Division 2 between Carol Melhuish and secretary Vivienne Wilson, the pair signing for 1-down.

Both had 2-down on the front nine holes and 1-up on the back, with Melhuish the eventual winner.

Nearest to the pin second shot winner’s were Myers for Division 1 and Trudy Herbert in Division 2.

Karen Panagopolous claimed the pro-shot.

In the quarter finals Cherryl Hill defeated Sue Agars 2-up, Bev Pascoe defeated Annette Ford 2/1, Lynda Nannings defeated Dianne Perryman 1-up and Gerraldine Scott defeat3ed Carol Megaw 6/4.

Due to low entrants in Division 2 there was no quarter final and only one semi-final to be played.

The semi-finals should see some competitive games.

Hill will have to give her good friend Pascoe an extra seven strokes.

Pacoe should not be underestimated with her straight fairway shots.

Vice captain Scott has performed well in recent weeks will also have her work cut out for her coming up against Nannings, who always performs well on the big stage.

Scott will have to give Nannings an extra four strokes.

Annand will aim to retain her Division 2, 2019 champion status and will go straight to the final.

The semi-final between Trudy Herbert (34 handicap) and Karen Panagopolous (35 handicap) will be one of experience and one of a new-comer to championships.

Panagopolous has proved over the last couple of month’s she is equal to the task, with several wins under her belt.

However, Herbert has been playing golf a long time and could prove hard to beat.

A stableford competition will be played for those not in the semi-finals.
