THIS 1954 FJ Holden continues to preserve the classical “old car smell” with over 50 years of original features maintained by owner Raymond Leigh.

Forever dreaming of owning his own FJ in his younger years, Mr Leigh jumped at the opportunity 18 years ago when he found one for sale.

Mr Leigh said the vehicle’s unique grill was one aspect which appealed to him the most.

“I just love how different it is to most of the older cars released,” he said.

“Old vehicles are just great.

“Everything is completely original including the cream paintwork, crimson red interior, the car’s running gears, dash and the Holden straight-six motor.”

Mr Leigh said has not modified the vehicle, stating he “likes it the way it is”.

“I was just talking to a friend one day and he told me he knew one for sale at the time,” he said.

“I went around and approached the owner and he gave it to me for not much at all.

“We drove it home straight away and we were lucky we did not have any problems.”

The Holden enthusiast said he has not driven the car further than Naracoorte.

“We drove it from a wedding in Naracoorte and back and it went really well,” Mr Leigh said.

“People seem to love it for wedding and we have been approached by many people.”

Mr Leigh said the value of the car has increased over the years due to its original condition.

“I think it is because Holdens are not even made here any more and there seems have been an increased demand for older cars,” he said.

“It just back a lot of memories especially for the older people.

“I will not tell you the stories some people have told me.”

Mr Leigh said the car has stayed in the South East for most of its life.

“I think knowing its history also adds value to the car,” he said.

“People have told me it is hard to find a car which is still as is.

“Most people mess with them, repaint them but I want to keep it original.”
