Suicide awareness community event

COMMUNITY EVENT: Lifeline South East crisis support coordinator Jeff Hodge said he hopes they can attract a large crowd at the Out of the Shadows free community breakfast next week.

FIGHTING the stigma of suicide, Lifeline South East will once again host the nationally recognised Out of the Shadows free community breakfast next week.

Held across the country, the event is a chance for people from all walks of life to come together and reflect on the impact suicide has on those throughout the region.

Chief executive officer Eve Barratt said it was open to people who are bereaved, helpers or simply part of the community and wanting to make a difference.

“It’s about moving away from the darkness of stigma surrounding suicide and into the light filled area where people seek help,” she said.

Taking place for the 11th time this year with the support of the Mount Gambier and Grant District councils, attendees will be welcomed to a free cooked breakfast by the Lakes Rotary Club and walk around the Blue Lake.

“The walk is not obligatory and fits in with the notion of a coming together of community around some hot food and drinks, with no speeches or formalities, but a quiet reflection on the cost of suicide in our community,” Ms Barratt said.

“Suicide can happen to anybody, we are all humans being exposed to emotions, so it is important to have that community conversation.”

Out of the Shadows will take place on September 9 at the Mel Hirth lookout from 7.30am.

Registration is essential for catering purposes prior to the event.

Contact Lifeline South East on 8723 2299 or office@lifelinese.com.au to secure your place before September 4.
