Pride in our patch

I really feel as though Mount Gambier is maturing when we are provided the opportunity to host events such as the Digital Garden Mount Gambier as part of Illuminate Adelaide.

Illuminate Adelaide and the Government of South Australia, through the South Australian Tourism Commission, have collaborated with the City of Mount Gambier to bring the event to our city.

I am delighted that we have been chosen to host the event again this year, after last year’s successful inaugural event which attracted some 10,000 visitors.

Digital Garden transforms the Cave Garden/Thugi into a magical wonderland of light and interactive installations for all ages to enjoy.

Friday 5 August saw the launch of the installation which continues until 21 August from 6pm to 10pm each evening.

I invite everyone to put on an extra layer of clothing and visit this free event to enjoy the carnival atmosphere, particularly over the weekend when there will be artisan markets, food trucks and music, all adding to the atmosphere.

Speaking of exciting events, this week Council announced that the much-loved Mount Gambier Christmas Parade will once again travel along Commercial Street on Saturday 19 November.

It is two years since we have been able to enjoy the traditional parade due to the pandemic and I know that people of all ages will be excited to welcome Father Christmas, heralding the start of the Festive Season in our city.

Thinking of Christmas, my thoughts turn to the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal which last year, through the generosity of the local community, raised a record breaking amount of $51,231.

These funds provide assistance to those who are most in need in our community each Christmas and I would encourage those who can, to donate again this year and one way you can do so is give to collectors who will be at the Parade.

Mayor Lynette Martin,

City of Mount Gambier.
