THE City of Mount Gambier was privileged to host the newly elected Labor Government’s Country Cabinet meeting held last week in Mount Gambier.

As part of a pre-election promise Premier Peter Malinauskas brought Country Cabinet to the Limestone Coast as the first of his visits to Regional South Australia.

Premier Malinauskas has stated that Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast present great economic opportunity for South Australia and he recognises that strong regions make for an even stronger State.

In bringing his Cabinet and heads of departments to Mount Gambier it gave me the opportunity to discuss with them many of the issues affecting our residents and with the assistance of the recently delivered budget I hope that through continued advocation we can assist the housing crisis, increase support for health services, and attract funding to ensure our forestry industry remains sustainable into the future.

Speaking of the forestry industry, last Friday evening I attended the Green Triangle Timber Industry Gala Awards night at The Barn.

What an outstanding evening it was as we celebrated the success of the timber industry in our region and it was a reminder that through collaboration we have the power to achieve. I congratulate the organising committee and all the stakeholders in our magnificent timber industry who came together for this event.

The buzz in the Limestone Coast continued throughout the June long weekend which saw many people visit our city for events such as the Gravity Enduro, the Australian Highland Cattle Society 30th National Show and just to enjoy our many attractions and beautiful natural assets.

On this holiday weekend celebrating the Queen’s Birthday, deserving Australians are recognised through the Queen’s Birthday Honours and I wish to congratulate three Mount Gambier residents for receiving such awards.

Pauline Kenny and Graham Carter received an Order of Australia Medal and Jerry Leech received an AM.

On behalf of the City of Mount Gambier I congratulate Pauline, Graham and Jerry on being recognised for their work in our community over many years.
