ALTHOUGH 2021 has been another challenging year for everyone in our community, in Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast, we have been fortunate to have had minimal direct exposure to Covid-19 at this point in time, and I wish to thank you all for the role you have played in achieving this.
When the need arose to isolate, wear masks, practice social distancing you did so, and continue to do so – I thank you all for looking after each other.
I know that Christmas is not always a happy time for everyone in our community and so my thoughts turn to you and also to those who may not be able to be reunited with family and friends.
To everyone who has contributed to the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, I thank you for your kindness because you have made Christmas for some families a little better than it may otherwise have been.
I am thrilled to report that we have surpassed last year’s record fundraising amount of just over $40,000.
I am overwhelmed and gratified by the generosity shown by our supportive community.
It really is such a wonderful feeling to know that so many people care to improve the lives of others during this special time of year.
I thank Council staff and volunteers who worked together to create Santa’s Boulevard, a static Christmas display at the Valley Lakes in November which had to be the happiest place in Mount Gambier at that time.
I thank our wonderful community for donating more than $10,500 to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal at the event.
I also take the opportunity to acknowledge the role that our first responders have continued to play during 2021 – we are indebted to your work in times of crisis and in keeping our community safe.
On behalf of our community, I thank you.
My thanks also to elected members, the many community groups and volunteers who work not only at Christmas time, but throughout the year to improve the quality of life for so many in our community so that Mount Gambier is an inclusive city where people lead fulfilling lives.
Whilst Covid-19 has taught us to be resilient, I believe it has also strengthened our sense of community and I think it is timely to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas.
I hope you remain safe this Festive Season and look forward optimistically to 2022.
Lynette Martin
Mayor,
City of Mount Gambier
