IT was a pleasure to welcome the new Governor of South Australia to the Limestone Coast this week.
Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC was appointed in October following positions as head of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and International Advisor to the Prime Minister.
Community leaders and community organisations and residents met with the Governor at events such as a lunch hosted by the Mayor of the City of Mount Gambier and an afternoon tea at Port MacDonnell hosted by Mayor Richard Sage.
More than 60 people attended this event, including 102 year old Mrs Cram, who is Grant District Council’s oldest resident.
These and other events held were great opportunities for our new Governor to hear first hand about issues facing our region as well as the enormous potential of the Limestone Coast.
I was also delighted that the Governor visited Timberlink Australia at Tarpeena and was briefed on the mill’s operations and the company’s history. Forestry is such a key industry in our community and it was great to see such a keen interest in it.
While our new Governor has only been in the job for a couple of months, she is clearly keen to be accessible and informed about local issues. I am sure many people in the Limestone Coast are appreciative that she has come to visit the Limestone Coast so early in her term.
The Governor was very personable and friendly, and very generous with her time.
It is important for regional residents across South Australia to have access to the state’s decision makers which is why I am so pleased that the Opposition Leader and Labor’s Shadow Cabinet is dedicated to Country Cabinet meetings. Country Cabinet meetings are a direct line of contact to the state’s decision makers and that’s why if we are fortunate enough to be elected in Government next year, we have committed to continuing to have cabinet meetings in our local community.
Regional residents deserve to be heard, and regular catch ups with the entire team is an important commitment to make.
