Joint custodianship

I CONSIDER myself very fortunate as I look out of my mayoral office window to the lush green of the Crater Lakes precinct and I think how amazing it is that we have such a magnificent natural attraction just minutes from the central business district of our city.

Now that the City of Mount Gambier has joint custodianship of the Blue Lake perimeter and the Crater Lakes with SA Water, it presents many opportunities for council to explore and consult with the community as to how we see the area in the future.

The Crater Lakes area has many overlays including heritage and environmental considerations to protect how it is used and therefore preserve its natural beauty.

This area is enjoyed by many.

The mountain bike club, trail runners, walkers, bird watchers, disc golf players who tell me it is one of the best courses in Australia, and people in general enjoying the beauty of the Valley Lakes picnic ground.

In order to preserve the area for all to enjoy we have to be respectful of everyone’s needs in this amazing shared space.

Elected members and I will be creating a Crater Lakes master plan so that we ensure that this jewel in the crown of Mount Gambier is activated to capture its full potential, whilst preserving the rich cultural heritage that makes this area unique.
