Rising star shows her game

THE weather was kind to the small group of women who ventured out at the Blue Lake Golf Club, to play the second round of the Marlene Lingham Memorial stableford competition sponsored by The Blue Lake Bar and Bistro.

Heavy fairways affected play, but the accolades go to Jorja Morale, an up-and-coming junior who cemented her place in the women’s competition with a massive 37 points, to claim the win in Division 2.

Morale is one to watch with her handicap slowly reducing.

Her father Bruce can take credit for his steady coaching and Jorja is seen as one of his playing partners most Saturday’s.

The winner in Division 1 Josie Ashby wiped the first hole and added two bogeys on her way to the halfway mark, but was able to add a three-point par on the fifth hole, turning to the back nine with 15 points.

Scoring on every hole and another three-point par on the 13th gave her a credible 17 points, finishing with 32.

Ashby also won the best back nine novelty event.

Runner-up Fiona Punton, a school teacher on holidays and another regular Saturday player, had splits of 18/12.

Her front nine did include three three-pointers but unfortunately the back nine proved more difficult, with too many bogeys and a wipe, but 30 points was enough to collect a voucher.

In Division 2, Morale’s 37 points was well clear of runner-up Lucy Richards with 32.

Morale set herself up with 22 points on the front nine that included five three-pointers.

A wipe on the 10th was immediately taken care of with a birdie five-pointer on the 11th.

A few too many bogeys kept her score to 15 on the difficult back nine.

Lucy Richards backed up last week’s third place with the runner-up voucher this week with 32 points.

Her card showed a slow start, with just 12 points on the front nine, but she was one of only a few who coped better on the back nine, with three three-pointers and only one bogey to add 20 points to her score.

Richards won the best back nine score.

Division 1 winner of the nearest to pin second shot on the par three 16th hole was Sue Agars.
