Back on the fairways

AFTER the cancellation of the third round of the Summer Trophy due to predicted extreme temperatures, the women were back to business at the Blue Lake Golf Club the following week to play the first round of the Metro Bakery and Cafe Silver Salver.

The mild weather and well-manicured fairways once again resulted in excellent scores for the par competition.

Division 1’s Sue Agars posted the winning score of +5 to show the way.

It equated to 42 stableford points and she will have a drop in handicap after facing the handicapper before her next outing on the fairways.

Agar’s scorecard included seven pluses, nine squared holes and two wipe-outs to win.

But she did not stop there, as she claimed the nearest to pin second shot on the long par 3 16th hole and the pro-shot on the par 3 fifth to round out a perfect game of golf.

Runner-up Ronda Edwards followed with +2, her scorecard almost identical to Agars’, with the exception of a birdie-two on the par 3 second hole and four wipe-outs.

Third was Helen Stratford with +1, which included six par’s and unfortunately she let herself down with five wipe-outs.

Women’s president Beryl Mahoney was back on the podium for Division 2 with a credible +2 after playing consistent golf.

The outward nine score of +2 set the scene and then playing to her handicap on the inward nine gave her the top prize.

Runner-up, secretary Vivienne Wilson was close on the heels of Mahoney, signing for +1, after being square on the outward nine and +1 coming home.

Third went to Trudy Herbert after a count-back from Shannon McDonnell, with both signing for square.

Herbert was one-down on the turn and finished with +1.

Lynette Hirth was happy to win a ball for her division’s nearest second shot to the pin on the par 3 16th hole.
