Mixed results in Open pennant

MIXED results came for the Mount Gambier RSL Bowling Club Open pennant teams on Saturday.

The Division 1 Red travelled to Naracoorte after last weeks disappointment of not cementing a home final.

The trip was not kind for the reigning pennant champions as they were well beaten 95-57.

Michael Fox’s rink was the only shining light for the day, recording a close 27/26 win.

Other skippers Deane Wilkinson 11/35 and Strawb Masters 19/34 recorded heavy defeats and will now have to contest this week’s qualifying final against Mount Gambier.

The Blue side also played at Naracoorte against Mount Gambier in their winner-takes-all semi-final. The Mount Gambier side was too strong on the day and handed out an 80-50 defeat to the RSL team which now ends their pennant campaign for this season.

Skippers Glenn Wright 15/33, Rex Heins 20/21 and Chris Waugh 15/26 all suffered defeats on the day.

In Divison 2 the RSL had the short trip to the Mount Gambier club to face Naracoorte in their

semi-final showdown.

A hard fought 83-74 victory keeps the RSL side’s season alive.

Graeme Smith 36/20 and Wayne Legutko 27/20 were the winning skippers, with Ian Moulden losing out 20/30.

The RSL now faces Naracoorte RSL this week for a grand final berth.

Divison 3 had the luxury of a home final after finishing top of the table after the minor rounds.

They took full advantage and stormed into the grand final with a comprehensive 87-62 victory over Millicent Red.

Alby McIntyre 32/19 and Des Moulden 33/17 led their rinks to victory, with Noel Miller’s rink falling short and suffering a 22/26 defeat.

Division 4 travelled to Robe to face a strong home team and fell short, losing 67-57.

Tony Freeman’s rink gave the team every chance, with a 25/15 win.

Garry Burke’s 15/29 and Ron Cook’s 17/23 rinks both fell short of the mark and now have to face Beachport Red to book a grand final berth against Robe.
