Summer trophy underway

A STRONG field of 26 women were greeted with ideal conditions last week at the Blue Lake Golf Club in the first of four rounds of the Sorrentos Summer trophy.

The Summer trophy comprises stroke, stableford, par and stroke rounds, accumulating points for first, second and third places.

At the end of the four rounds the best three scores are taken into account to select a winner.

Competitors were vying to be one of the top scorers to gain valuable points to gain a lead and it was Division 2s Dianne Allen who took her place at the pointy end of the field with a net 68.

A count-back was required in Division 1 between Annette Ford and Dianne Perryman, both carding net 72.

Ford (94/32/72) saw her back-nine have the edge over Perryman (91/19/72) and with the count-back done on the back, it gave her the top spot.

Cherryl Hill came in third only one stroke behind (96/23/73) followed by Josie Ashby and Ronda Edwards, both with net 74.

Division 2s top spot was well deserved by Allen, who posted a red-hot score of 110/42/68 and also secured three points in the Summer trophy.

Allen had pars on the two par three’s on the front-nine but was left wondering what could have been after having a triple bogey on the 407-metre par five third hole.

The rest of her game remained consistent with her handicap.

Beryl Mahoney was runner-up, only one under her handicap (105/32/73) after also playing consistent golf.

Trudy Herbert followed up with 112/37/75 to take third spot.

Nearest to pin second shot winners were Hill and Mahoney.

The pro-shot winner on the down-hill par three fifth hole was captain Helen Myers.

A novelty event, most accurate 18 fairway drives, went to vice-captain Geraldine Scott and Bev Pascoe.
