Woman avoids jail for hiding in truck to enter SA, driver arrested

UPDATE 2.30pm – The driver of a truck who allegedly brought a 65-year-old woman into South Australia from Victoria has been located and arrested.

About 1pm today, COVID Compliance Officers attended a business in Regency Park where they located and arrested a 46-year-old Mount Gambier man.

The man was taken to the Adelaide City Watch House where he has been charged with failing to comply with Directions under the Emergency Management Act.

He will be refused bail and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today.

A MOUNT Gambier woman has received a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to failing to comply with a COVID-19 direction.

Patricia Anne Kohn appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court today accused of hiding in a truck to re-enter South Australia and evade border patrols after spending several weeks in Victoria.

Police believed the offence took place sometime on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, arresting the 65-year-old Mount Gambier woman after receiving a report she had re-entered the state.

Magistrate Maria Panagiotidis convicted Kohn of the offence earlier today, handing down an 18-day prison sentence that was suspended upon the defendant entering a nine-month good behaviour bond.

She was also ordered to pay $601 in court costs and will enter a 14-day isolation period at a Mount Gambier address from today.

Enquiries continue regarding the identity of the driver, and if they were aware the woman was hiding in the truck.

Any similar incidents should be reported to police immediately via the Police Assistance Line of 131 444.
