Nangwarry preschool program to return

Erika Hurley (3) TBW Newsgroup
BRIGHT FUTURE: Nangwarry Primary School principal Erika Hurley looks forward to reopening the gates to the Nangwarry Preschool Program in 2021 following its suspension in 2020.

NANGWARRY Primary School will reinstate its preschool facility for 2021 with expressions of interest already received for four prospective students.

The 2020 preschool service was suspended late last year after the Education Department determined it did not meet the required six enrolments needed to trigger government funding as required under its policy.

A community push to form an integrated service at the Nangwarry site was also squashed by the department, which advised there were suitable standalone services, including in Penola and Kalangadoo, which families could access if required.

School principal Erika Hurley said the service would return in 2021 even if it meant the department quota was not reached and it had to be school-funded.

The school is preparing to send out offer letters next month, with four expressions of interest currently received.

In a coup for future generations, the facility has just remodelled its bathroom facilities to service new and existing students.

“This is a really positive step forward because it means we are able to upgrade and provide proper change facilities rather than just the playgroup and extend it to other programs such as occasional care,” Ms Hurley said.

“This will be a very positive impact on the school’s future and the community because it changes the perception of Nangwarry and encourages students from all ages to band together.”

The school will host a community fun day on Monday to highlight its returning preschool service, inviting the public to the facility from 11am until 2pm.

“We are using the day to encourage parents to enrol their interest in preschool at the mid-year mark rather than in Term 4 so preschools such as ours will be able to apply for the funding we need,” Ms Hurley said.

A sausage sizzle, Noorla Yo-Long Blue Light outdoor activities, show bags, arts and crafts and a storytime session are planned for the day.

Free dance classes for children up to five years old will be hosted by MJ Dance.
