SOUTH Australia’s first regional Krispy Kreme doughnut production facility is rapidly taking shape on Mount Gambier’s eastern fringe with around 50 contractors working to transform the prime highway site.
The state’s first Hot Light doughnut factory outside of Adelaide is expected to open by the end of the year as part of the landmark On The Run Mount Gambier East development.
The complex – which is expected to create 15 permanent jobs once operational – will include 24/7 access, fuel facilities, supermarket essentials, takeaway food lines and a truckers lounge.
Dycer Constructions site manager Ken Greaves said the build was progressing around a week ahead of schedule and had employed around 50 contractors since work started on June 15.
Mr Greaves said there had been no construction issues so far with the foundations, main walls, plumbing and fuel facilities all installed.
“We were involved with the Naracoorte OTR development as well and it was much the same, the locals loved it,” he said.
“The shops are fitted out like a supermarket and you can buy anything you want there.
“It is great for the local town and the workforce.”
Mr Greaves expected the site to be finished by the forecast December date.
“It has been a rewarding process seeing it all come together and when the roof is on it will just be great,” he said.
OTR community partnerships and public relations head Joann Skene said job creation was essential to growing regional communities.
“This exciting development in Mount Gambier will engage local contractors during the construction phase and create an additional 15 permanent roles to be filled by people of all ages from the Mount Gambier community,” Ms Skene said.
“We will also offer employees the opportunity for career development and training.”
Krispy Kreme SA general manager Mark Higginbottom said he was excited to bring the iconic brand to Mount Gambier and hoped to secure the best job applicants possible.
“We are excited to set up a production and processing operation to support the local retail business in Mount Gambier,” Mr Higginbottom said.
OTR will also continue its initiative of providing public access to defibrillators at its regional stores with one to be installed at Mount Gambier.
