RETIREMENT BECKONS: Former Cellulose and Millicent Mill employee Michael Scanlon has spent 57 years with KCA.

A VETERAN ex-Millicent Mill employee has recently been honoured with the naming of a room at the new Sydney headquarters of Kimberly-Clark Australia.

Now based in the harbour city, Michael Scanlon is retiring from KCA on Friday after a probable company record of 57 years of service.

Originally from Glencoe and Millicent, he is looking forward to moving to be closer to family and friends in South Australia.

Mr Scanlon started his career as a teenager in 1963 as a stores clerk at the Cellulose Australia Limited Mill at Snuggery.

Now closed, it was a sister plant to the nearby Millicent Mill.

15 years later, Mr Scanlon was appointed the purchasing officer at the Apcel Mill – the forerunner for Millicent Mill – which was jointlyowned by Kimberly-Clark Australia and Amcor.

Mr Scanlon progressed through the organisation to his current position as procurement manager in the Sydney head office.

Throughout the course of his career, Mr Scanlon has been involved in a number of major events in the Millicent Mill’s history including the Year 2000 Millennium bug project and the construction of the number five tissue manufacturing machine.

“My time at KimberlyClark has given me the opportunity to work on some very interesting projects over the years, across various markets including, Australia, China ,Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, America and England,” Mr Scanlon said.

“I’m very fortunate to have met some wonderful people along the way and have made many lifelong friends both locally and internationally.

“It has been a remarkable 57 years.”

KCA managing director Doug Cunningham praised Mr Scanlon’s contribution to the success of the company.

“A room in the new North Sydney office has been named the Scanlon room in recognition of Michael’s loyalty and commitment to KCA over almost six decades,” Mr Cunningham said.

“During his time at KCA, Michael has become a close friend and confidante for many people and he will be sorely missed be everyone.”
