Trainer backs course decision

Richard Wilson TBW Newsgroup
CUP DOUBT: This year’s Scott Group of Companies Gold Cup is now in doubt, but Mr Wilson said the track should be the main priority.

MOUNT Gambier horse trainer Richard Wilson (pictured) has backed a decision to suspend race meetings at the Allan Scott Glenburnie Racecourse indefinitely to allow time for the track to recover.

Reflecting on a difficult period for local trainers and the Mount Gambier Racing Club, Mr Wilson believed the right decision had been made.

“At least they tried to give us a chance to train our horses, but it has just got to the stage where we cannot do it anymore,” Mr Wilson said.

“It’s a brilliant track when it’s working, but (currently) it’s just not working.”

Mr Wilson said trainers were fortunate to still have the steeplechase track to continue to train horses.

“As long as they can hold it together we will use it and we are lucky that we do not have the same number of horses we used to have galloping over it,” he said.

“But we will have to be mindful to use the sand track as well.”

The two-time Gold Cup winning trainer believed it was not the end of the world if this year’s event had to be postponed.

“I would think it’s a real possibility and so be it – I know it’s hard for the club, but you have to get the course right,” he said.

“You cannot expect people to come and put their hard-earned money down on a track which plays so different.”
