Shifting demand leads to bank cut

Face-to-face banking services have been further reduced in Millicent, with the ANZ Bank temporarily closing its doors at 12.30pm.

The George Street facility will only be open for three hours from 9.30am each week day until further notice.

This equates to a reduction of 18.5 hours per week on its usual trading hours.

Customers have been told the temporary closure has been brought on as a result of unavailability of staff.

An ANZ Bank media unit spokesman said 90 ANZ branches were temporarily closed on any given day at the moment.

“It is a result of the various restrictions that have been in place for COVID-19 and the knock-on impacts,” the spokesperson said.

“As ANZ sees increased and ongoing demand for our calll centres, we have reconsidered our branch opening hours in order to help customers where the demand is greatest.

“Branch staff at a number of locations across the country, including Millicent, have revised their roles

in order to help customers with online banking and other self-service channels.

“Our Millicent team continues to assist customers, both locally in the morning and then supporting a remote national call centre team every afternoon from 12.30pm.”

The company spokesperson said customers could access banking online.

The early shuts of the ANZ Bank follow the permanent closure of the Millicent Commonwealth Bank on May 8 after almost 60 years of trading.

The Millicent branch of the People’s Choice Credit Union has temporarily ceased trading on Saturday mornings.

The position of the onsire manager of Bank SA Millicent was abolished last month and its trading hours were cut.

Certain banking services are currently provided at the Millicent Post Office, but its Saturday trading is also currently suspended.
