THE Mount Gambier Community RSL will overhaul its ageing Diggers Room in an effort modernise the facility and broaden its use for the community.

The Sturt Street facility will use a $30,000 Federal Government Veteran and Community Program grant to make the long-awaited upgrades to improve the gathering space.

Mount Gambier Community RSL president Bob Sandow the funding would be used to purchase new furniture, replace damaged ceiling panels and install a big-screen television and electronic projector to modernise the space.

“We want to make this room more family-friendly, while maintaining the values and traditions of the RSL,” Mr Sandow said.

“When we went ahead with stage three of renovations in 2009, this room was left due to lack of funding and also the fact I think veterans did not want anything touched at the time.

“But it is time to move on and update to more modern ways of thinking, but we will not be losing sight of RSL values and traditions.”

Mr Sandow said the facility was a community hub for Mount Gambier residents with the function rooms and museum a representation of the RSL sub-branch.

“We allow 37 not-for-profit organisations to use the RSL at no cost, which draws in interest for birthdays and functions,” he said.

“Our function rooms are available to the public and we would love to see them used more.

“We are counting on the Diggers Room to bring more revenue for the RSL and offset some running costs once it is upgraded.”

Mr Sandow said all future plans would be approved by the region’s veterans before development began.

Announcing the funding, Member for Barker Tony Pasin said he was pleased it would directly benefit veterans, their families and the broader community.

“The dedication and hard work of organisations such as the Mount Gambier RSL ensure veterans and their families receive essential services, support and opportunities allowing them to continue active roles in their local communities,” Mr Pasin said.

“The Mount Gambier RSL is an important part of the local community in particular because of its commitment to recognising and supporting those who have served and sacrificed for our nation.”
