Ambulance volunteer’s commitment recognised

SERVICE REWARDED: Limestone Coast South Australian Ambulance Service volunteer David Walker has received a prestigious award from the state’s ambulance service recognising his efforts in the community.

MOUNT Gambier business owner and ambulance officer David Walker has been awarded the SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) Certificate of Appreciation for his commitment and engagement with Limestone Coast communities during National Volunteers Week.

Although Mr Walker and his partner are kept busy operating the Treehouse Adventure Centre and Kaboom Family Entertainment, he offers time outside of work by volunteering for the SAAS Limestone Coast Volunteer Regional Response Team.

Mr Walker has contributed more than 1000 hours of service and supported communities from Port MacDonnell, Bordertown and Robe.

“Volunteering has changed my outlook and direction in life in so many positive ways,” he said.

“I’m here to help people in need in what at times, is such a scary moment for them.

“Yes we all have those tricky jobs we go to, but the support we receive from SAAS is second to none.

“We all have the same passion and same goal, to provide the best care and treatment to our patients in their time of need.

“I put on my uniform and hold my head high, I’m proud to volunteer with this amazing organisation and my family is just as proud too.”

SAAS operations country executive Julia Waddington-Powell said National Volunteer Week was a time for individuals to thank those who selflessly donate time to the community.

“Ambulance services in regional and remote South Australia rely on volunteers from the local area to provide exceptional care when our communities need it the most,” she said.

“With every incident attended, SAAS volunteers positively change the lives of those within their community, ensuring they stay healthy and protected.

“We are in unexpected and uncertain times and I would like to especially commend our volunteers for their extraordinary efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The ambulance service encourages community members to demonstrate their support for SAAS volunteers by decorating outdoor spaces with something red as part of the #ColourYourCommunityRed campaign.
