Glencoe couple to raise funds for flying doctors service

RUNNING FOR A CAUSE: Steve and Tash Williams will tackle a 30km running challenge as they travel by foot from Glencoe to Mount Gambier while raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

A GLENCOE couple will put their best feet forward and take on 30km run to help raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

Tash and Steve Williams will undertake the test of endurance to raise money for the new patient transfer facility at the Mount Gambier Airport.

The couple will run from Glencoe to Mount Gambier at the end of May, embracing the challenge after developing a passion for running.

Now calling for community support for the charitable cause, the couple are honoured to support the vital medical service which has not been spared the impacts of a devastating bushfire season and the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“The RFDS this year between the virus and the bushfires, alongside their regular service, has just been fantastic and what they provide the community is such an important necessity,” Ms Williams said.

The couple said running was something different to their usual gym-based routine, which had a strength focus and mild aerobic work.

“We usually do fitness training in the gym which was more lifting and shorter cardio sessions for about an hour,” Mr Williams said.

“Now we probably run longer than that and it is more intense because it can be quite difficult if we go up hills so we do think our fitness levels are much higher.”

Despite being slightly nervous for the long distance run, the couple said they would be happy with the achievement regardless of the time it takes to complete it.

“We are not running to break any records, we are just doing it because we want to,” Ms Williams said.

“If we can jog the whole way there and not stop then that would be a major achievement for us.”

Mount Gambier RFDS fundraising committee member Bob Johnson said the fundraiser was a fantastic initiative.

“I heard the two were going to be doing the run and I thought they may be able to help us out,” Mr Johnson said.

“We need to make sure our aircraft are kept in the air and raise as much funding as we possible can.

“We have had a busy time and I can appreciate people being short of money but we do need to continue raising funds because it really is an essential service.”

The couple will tackle the challenge on May 31, starting at Glencoe and running along Wandilo Road towards Mount Gambier.
