Borderline Speedway calendar wiped clean due to COVID-19

Cary Jennings Tbj 3108 TBW Newsgroup
GATES CLOSED: Borderline Speedway president Cary Jennings has advised the season is over for the Mount Gambier venue, with the COVID-19 caronavirus pandemic forcing the Easter Sprintcar Trail to be cancelled.

THE Borderline Speedway has taken another hit due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

With this weekend’s meeting already cancelled, the upcoming Easter Sprintcar Trail has also gone the same way.

The decision affects the Borderline Speedway, Avalon Speedway and Premier Speedway in Warrnambool, with events previously scheduled for Friday, April 10 at Avalon, Saturday, April 11 at the Borderline Speedway and Sunday, April 12 at the Premier Speedway.

It effectively ends the Borderline Speedway’s season.

Club president Cary Jennings said it was important to look after the health and well being of all involved.

“We have to look after our staff and patrons,” he said.

“This is the end of our season now.

“We look forward to next season and with everything going well we will have a bigger and better year if we can.”

Jennings said the situation was the same around the region and the country.

“It was inevitable something like this would happen,” he said.

“We do not like cancelling things but this was out of our control.

“We abide by what our governing body and the government tells us.

“I have been in contact with Speedway Australia and they acknowledged the problems we are having.

“There are numerous speedways around Australia which are closed for the rest of the season.

“Some have only just started and will not even get cranked up now.”

A release sent out yesterday said the decision has been made in the best interests of all staff, competitors, race fans and race day officials along with the broader community.

“On behalf of all three venues, we would sincerely like to thank all of our Easter Trail Partners, Camden Signage and Building Services, the Ray Scott Group, S.E Fire Extinguisher Services, Anderson Bob Cat Service and the Gillin Boys Foundation for their amazing support.

“To our amazing competitors and fans, we thank you for your understanding during these difficult times and rest assured that all three venues are committed to returning to racing as soon as we possibly can.

“In the interim we urge each-and-every one of you to continue to take the necessary pre-cautions as outlined for this pandemic as we look forward to seeing you at a racetrack again in the not too distant future.”

At this time all on-line ticketing will remain suspended with all pre-purchased ticket holders advised to visit each venues website and social media pages for updates on ticketing information.
