Students experience Singapore teaching methods

INTERNATIONAL LEARNING: UniSA Mount Gambier campus Bachelor of Education students Kayley Irvine and Chloe Cole are all smiles after returning from Singapore.

TWO budding educators have gained an insight into international teaching methods following a three week placement in Singapore.

UniSA Mount Gambier Bachelor of Education students Chloe Cole and Kayley Irvine were two of only 16 University of South Australia students to participate in the placement.

Both Chloe, from Mount Gambier and Kayley – who hails from Millicent – described the experience as “amazing”.

During the placement, Chloe worked with six children aged six and Kayley immersed herself with a group of four five year olds.

“I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to go to a new country and immerse myself in a different culture. It was great to see how they catered for the diversity of children from different ethnic backgrounds,” Kayley said.

Meanwhile, Chloe said she learnt much that she could apply to her teaching from the experience.

UniSA regional manager Ian McKay congratulated both students for challenging themselves and accepting the international opportunity.

“It was a terrific opportunity to develop skills professionally and personally,” Mr McKay said.

“This is another great example demonstrating that our local Mount Gambier students have comparable opportunities to students studying at city university campuses so they can have the benefits of studying in our local community but also be able to have the professional experiences that will take them far in their future careers, Mr McKay said.

Both Chloe and Kayley have expressed their appreciation for the support they received from staff from UniSA’s School of Education who planned and organised the experience with one of the staff travelling with the education students to Singapore.
