Penola leaders recognised as part of international day

Kirby Shearing And Josie Abbey TBW Newsgroup
INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION: Kirby Shearing from the Royal Oak Hotel joins Josie Abbey from the Penola Wellness Group as they prepare for International Women’s Day.

THE efforts of Penola and Coonawarra women will be celebrated on International Women’s Day with a major event at the Royal Oak Hotel.

Organised by the Penola Wellness Group, the event will celebrate the efforts and contribution women have made to industries across the region.

Group member Josie Abbey said the group wanted to do something different from their usual event and was a good way to celebrate women’s contributions.

“We thought we should do something because we usually cover mental health or drug or alcohol addiction so we thought we would go for something a bit lighter this time,” Ms Abbey said.

“We will celebrate some of the Penola and Coonawarra women because we are a region with successful women across the board from winemakers to health physios.”

Aboard with this year’s hashtag theme HP Equal will also be available for those to take photographs with at the event.

“People can come along and it will be a very causal event,” Ms Abbey said.

“We would also like to ask attendees to donate treats for the women on Kangaroo Island such as perfume or earrings.

“Apparently the women have nothing nice to go out in so we would love to show them support by doing that.”

The wellness group decided to host the event on International Women’s Day after its four-year history of focusing on women’s health.

“We have now expanded into general health and well-being so we thought why not celebrate International Women’s Day for the first time, ” Ms Abbey said.

“Women can come by themselves or they can get a group of girls together.

“It will be a nice girls night out for everyone around the community and it will be very informal so people do not feel pressured into anything.”

The event will be held on March 8 with tickets are available at the Royal Oak Hotel for $60 each.

Tickets include a three course meal and gin or fizz on arrival.
