MOUNT Gambier’s independent business group says it will work diligently this year to grow the city’s economy and advocate strongly for the commercial sector.

The city’s Chamber of Commerce will also mark its 70th anniversary this year, which is considered a major milestone for the grassroots business organisation.

Chamber president Hayley Neumann vowed the organisation would continue its strategic focus to ensure Mount Gambier remained the region’s commercial capital.

“The board of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce is very excited for 2020 and has been busily working behind the scenes over the past few months planning, not only for the year ahead, but looking ahead to the future after reviewing our strategic plan,” Ms Neumann said.

“This year’s 70th anniversary gives us the opportunity to reflect, to celebrate the achievements and the wonderful people who have been part of that history and to look forward to new challenges and services we can provide for our members.”

The business leader said the organisation stived to be a Chamber of Commerce that businesses wanted to join.

“We represent the business community at federal, state and local levels through advocacy, networking, information sharing and support services,” Ms Neumann said.

“Our strategic plan is focused and our board is enthusiastic and ready for action.”

The board has an “exciting calendar” of events for 2020 including mix and mingle events, breakfast meetings as well as upcoming member training opportunities.

“Once again, our Outstanding Business Awards will be held in October, highlighting our exceptional, professional and outstanding business community,” Ms Neumann said.

“We are also looking forward to our 70th birthday celebrations in June.”

The chamber is urging current and former members to take part in these celebrations.

“Members would like to be involved in the planning of the event or can provide us with any history or memorabilia, we would love to hear from you,” Ms Neumann said.

The board has also announced Venetia Langlands has stepped up, after many years on the board, to become vice president.

The chamber’s strategic plan includes strong advocacy for the business sector, supporting business entry, investment and growth as well as promoting member businesses.

The chamber also fosters membership networking and information sharing as well as celebrating excellence.

Importantly, the chamber will also focus on business and tourism growth, emerging businesses, member satisfaction along with encouraging and supporting individuals.

The organisation will also identify issues and opportunities affecting business and provide a clear chamber position on issues as well as a strong and credible voice for business.

The board will also increase influence within key decision-making groups
