AUSTRALIA’S top aerobatic pilot will fly in to perform at this year’s Bay Escape, as the popular community event celebrates a major milestone.
South Australian pilot and 13 time Australian Aerobatic Champion Chris Sperou will dive and roll his Super Stinker biplane in a show across Port MacDonnell’s bay for the event’s 25th anniversary.
The air show is just one of two new experiences at the late summer event, which is expected to draw crowds of around 4000 guests on February 22.
An authentic rock lobster fishing experience dubbed the Bay Escape Pull-a-Pot is also on offer and will give 40 guests a look inside the town’s main industry.
Committee member Jody Elliot said the exclusive experience was designed to showcase the town’s reputation as Australia’s Rock Lobster capital.
“We have got the largest cray fishing fleet in South Australia and there’s a real fascination with what fishos get up to out there,” she said.
“This event will give guests some great insight into what goes on out there with an experienced fisherman.
“You’ll get all the fun of catching crays with a nice big glass of wine in your hand and get to go home to a comfy bed at the end of the day, rather than sleep on a boat.”
Coordinator Ryan Donovan said preparations for the popular street party were well under way, with organisers “going all out” for 2020.
“25 years is a huge milestone for a community event and our team has been working hard to bring fresh ideas to the table this year and give our guests a great event experience,” he said.
“Not only will you be able to sit down and enjoy a wine and crayfish sandwich while listening to great local musos, you’ll be able to watch Chris Sperou dive and roll his way across the bay and actually get on board a professional cray boat.”
The annual event is held alongside Port MacDonnell’s new Waterfront precinct, which is due to start stage two works in coming months.
The event will also feature a wide selection of street food and wine vendors from across the Limestone Coast, market stalls, a dedicated kidzone and popular mascot Jay the Cray will also return to entertain the crowds.
The all-day bus service to and from Mount Gambier, introduced last year, will also run again.
“Thanks to all those who have continued to support us, including Bendigo Bank, Grant District Council and all those businesses that take the time out to make the day a great success,” Mr Donovan said.
“We’re inviting the whole Limestone Coast to join us on the day and see what Port Mac has to offer.”
