Fundraiser nourishes bushfire-affected regions

BUSHFIRE FUNDRAISER: Around 120 people participated in a yoga class held by Nourish Nook at the Railway Lands on Wednesday night, which led to $1500 in donations to the bushfire appeal.

A YOGA class held at the Mount Gambier Railway Lands on Wednesday night has raised $1500 for both people and wildlife affected by Australia’s bushfires.

Jo Hodges called on the Mount Gambier community to bring a donation to the Nourish Nook event at The Rail but was shocked by the response as around 120 people descended on the central park lands.

“We were wondering what we could do because so many people are celebrating the start of the new year, but then there’s all these people who are starting it off with nothing,” Ms Hodges said.

“We wanted to create an easy platform where people could come and donate and the response was just overwhelming.”

People of all ages donated money, toys, clothes and even sheets to wrap joeys, which brought Ms Hodges to tears.

“It was just beautiful, I knew we would get a few but the amount of people actually made me a bit teary,” Ms Hodges said.

“When there is a crisis in Australia, people really band together to help.”

The money will be shared between humanitarian and wildlife causes.
