Good books hard to go past in Millicent

STEADY trade over the festive season has delighted Millicent charity book shop volunteer Ruth Stratford.

She said a pleasing number of people had passed through the doors of the Millicent Lioness Club bookshop looking for bargain-priced books, CDs and DVDs.

“There is always demand for cooking and gardening books,” Ms Stratford said.

“Regarding fiction, the romances and mysteries written by Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb are very popular.”

The shop has about 2000 titles, but no space for encyclopaedias or Readers Digest volumes.

“There is no demand for them at all nowadays and they might end up going to landfill,” Ms Stratford said.

“As all the books we sell are donated from the Millicent district, all the proceeds from the shop support various local charities, causes and community projects.”

Year-round, a steady number of buyers pass through the shop in the IGA supermarket in George Street each Friday and Saturday.

The service club adds some Sunday trading sessions at the height of the festive season.

After success with pop-up bookshops at successive Geltwood Festivals, the service club has run a book shop in various Millicent locations over the past four years.
