GREEN Triangle timber processor NF McDonnell and Sons has been named a 2019 SafeWorkSA safety champion gold award winner for its dedication to safety and workplace well-being.
The competition, held in-line with Safe Work Month, is a SafeWorkSA initiative with the Mount Gambier-based firm sharing the gold accolade with Kilburn’s Advanced Plastic Recycling.
The statewide workplace safety watchdog invited businesses to register an event during October to promote Safe Work Month, attracting around 40 nominations.
NF McDonnell staff were given the chance to win prizes which were presented at a special safety meeting in October, with the entire work force in attendance.
A number of other activities were also organised during the month to support the company’s safety message including mental health awareness sessions, safe manual handling techniques and the promotion of healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
NF McDonnell work, health and safety manager Richard McLoughlin said winning the state award was a proud moment for everyone at the timber firm and was the result of a lot of hard work by the entire team.
“In the past few years we have seen a real shift in the safety culture right across the business and this award is proof that we are definitely heading in the right direction,” Mr McLoughlin said.
“None of what we have achieved would have been possible without the support and commitment from Ian and Shaun McDonnell, the management team and most importantly, the mill workers.”
SafeWorkSA commended the award winners for their originality, relevance to health and safety, the promotion of the events held and workplace engagement, with NF McDonnell and Sons named a standout across the board.
Reflecting on the accomplishment, NF McDonnell chief executive Craig Nisbet thanked staff for their dedication to safety.
“It is fantastic to see the efforts of our safety team, led by Mr McLoughlin, recognised by SafeWork SA through the National SafeWork Month Awards,” Mr Nisbet said.
“This award would not have been possible without the ongoing effort by a number of our staff to improve site safety, along with a genuine care for the safety and well-being of our people.”
Director Shaun McDonnell said the award was just the start for the company to maintain an industry-leading focus on mental health, fatigue management, hazard and risk management, work and life balance and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
“The amount of extra effort that goes on behind the scenes to ensure all levels of management are equipped with the tools and knowledge to implement these initiatives is enormous and I believe shows a real commitment by the company,” he said.
“To have our business recognised for our efforts is a testament to our desire to go above and beyond to ensure we remain an industry leader.”
