MOUNT Gambier Library celebrated its 10th anniversary in style on Tuesday with dozens of residents enjoying a special “book” cake to mark the occasion.

With more than four million visitors to the community space over the last 10 years, the library welcomed hundreds more for the celebration.

Balloons filled the room as children were able to enjoy several activities put on by the library staff before the cutting of the special cake.

“We wanted to put something on for children, so we threw a bit of a party in the cave with lots of things to do for them,” library manager Georgina Davison said.

“The cake was pretty special, we had it uniquely made for this occasion and I do not think you’ll find another one like it.”

When trying to pinpoint the library’s success, Ms Davison put it down to the fact it was a space for everyone in the community and beyond.

“I think it’s a space anyone can come and relax and the staff do a really great job of being inclusive,” she said.

“A good library has something to offer everybody.

“We have 30,000 visitors a month, which is pretty incredible.”
South East resident Allen Day said he visits the library most days to access the resources it has to offer the community.

“I just love the library because I can come in here and check my emails,” he said.

“It is also just a great place to relax and read the newspaper.”

Also present for the celebration on Tuesday was Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin, who acknowledged the work of the council at the time to build such a fantastic space for the community.

“It is great to celebrate the library’s 10th anniversary and to acknowledge the success it has been in our community,” Ms Martin said.

“We are very proud of the library and the role it has played over the last decade and acknowledge the work of the council at the time who drove the project.”

Ms Martin said it was recognised as one of the best regional libraries in the country.

“That is a credit to the staff who provide fabulous programs for people of all ages,” Ms Martin said.
