“I FEEL like maybe one day in the future my friends will notice and will reflect off how I act.”

Allendale Area School Year 6 student Ruby Moody’s words reflect her sense of social responsibility, which has resulted in the young student winning a Fred Hollows Humanity Award.

The award celebrates Year 6 students who follow in Fred Hollow’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community, showing compassion, integrity and kindness in their every day lives.

Youth worker Cara Doody said Ruby was a clear contender for the award as soon as she read the criteria.

“The one thing we have noticed about Ruby is her maturity level, her kindness towards others and being helpful in the classroom,” Ms Doody said.

“Ruby is not somebody who is in trouble at any stage.

“I know outside of the school and in the community and particularly in her baseball, I have heard nothing but positive comments.”

Ms Doody said when students stood out like Ruby they deserved recognition.

“We figured she really did deserve the award and it stood out to all three of us,” she said.

“It was all very secretive and Ruby did not know she had been nominated.”

Ruby was grateful the school recognised her kind actions.

“They actually notice the good things I do for other people,” she said.

“I like helping and am still thinking of more ways I can do it in the community.”

Ruby accepted the award at an official presentation held at the Adelaide Town Hall in October.
