Obedience and agility trials put pampered pooches to test

ON COURSE: Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club agility trainer Karen Brooksby and member Sharon Mulshine with Bella, Meg and Kiri.

CANINES of all shapes and sizes will test their skills this weekend at the annual Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club October trials.

Dogs and their trainers will travel from as far as Adelaide and Melbourne to participate in the agility and obedience trials.

Held over two days, agility trainer Karen Brooksby said the event was one of the club’s annual highlights.

“We have our Easter trials and our October trials every year,” she said.

“It is always exciting to get the dogs out on the course and see how they have progressed.

“We do mock trials to get a feel of how a real trial will go, but the actual event is much more exciting and something we all look forward to.”

Over the course of the weekend, dogs will participate in different agility and obedience events in addition to “twilight games” on Saturday afternoon.

The games include snooker and strategic pairs.

READY AND WAITING: Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club members prepare for the October trials at Hastings Cunningham Reserve this weekend.

Snooker requires dogs to run around a course and collect points by completing as many different activities as they can before time runs out.

In strategic pairs, a dog and their trainer must work with another team to complete the course.

“You get some people who are very serious about it all but others that just have a bit of a laugh so it is quite funny to watch,” Ms Brooksby said.

“We are all having fun competing in the normal events,

but the games just let a little of the pressure off.”

The first event will start at 8.30am tomorrow and the day is expected to finish at 5pm.

The Sunday schedule will start at 8.30am, with the competition expected to finish at midday.
