WINNING FEELING: The winners of the annual Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations golf day were the Lament Quartet.

IN the first week of the month-long Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations, last Friday saw the return of the annual golf day at the Penola golf course.

Despite patches of rain throughout the day, the weather was otherwise ideal.

A good field saw 14 teams take to the greens in a social four-ball ambrose, with teams and individual participants travelling from as far as Melbourne and Sydney.

The Lament Quartet, consisting of Dave Lament, Tyson Ploenges, Kym Vaughn and Ray Patching produced a winning net score of 51 2/5, to take home the coveted red jackets.

Not too far behind were first-time Coonawarra golf day participants Paul Searle, Darren Wallace, Troy Hamilton and Chris Hammet who traveled from Mount Barker to attend and finished with a net score of 55 7/5.

Rounding out the placings with an overall score of 57 was the team of James Norcock, Henry Norcock, Brian Norcock and Ryan Paech.

Novelty prizes for the day saw the longest drive on the first hole go to David Boyd and Katie Lewis.

Ploenges and Marg Ferguson claimed the honours on the 15th hole.

Nearest the pins went to Patching on the seventh hole, Bill Burley on the ninth, plus Paul Harmer and Sam Evans on the 13th.
