Relay to raise funds for mental health initiative

A MENTAL health relay will be held in Millicent later this month to raise money and awareness to support Limestone Coast service providers.

Event organiser Chantelle Fuller encourages the community to rally behind the September 29 event held at McLaughlin Park, which will support the Wattle Range Suicide Prevention Network and headspace.

Teams will walk around a loop with a baton with the goal to keep circulating from 10am until 6pm.

Ms Fuller – a gym owner – developed the concept after initially planning to enter the Limestone Coast Relay For Life cancer fundraiser.

“I was thinking about doing Relay for Life when one of my clients suggested doing something specifically for Millicent,” Ms Fuller said.

Launching the inaugural Mental Health Relay, Ms Fuller has already received strong community support with many groups and clubs wanting to become involved.

“We have had a really positive response from the community and I’m planning to get batons where people can personalise them with a name for someone they’re running for.

“Mental health is something that has affected me and many other people I know,” she said.

“I do not think I have met someone where mental health has not affected them.

“It may not be themselves personally, but their friends or family in Millicent.”

Teams can still register for the event with tickets available from Freaky Fit and Denton’s Sportspower, or available on the day.

Adults are $15, children aged 5-15 are $5 and children under 5 are free.

In addition to the relay, there will be metafit and bootcamp classes, kids’ soccer, a bouncy castle, raffle, canteen and bar facilities.
