POLICE across the Limestone Coast will monitor driver and crowd behaviour as winter sports finals continue this month.
Millicent’s McLaughlin Park will host the Western Border football and netball grand finals on September 14 while the Mid South East preliminary and grand finals are scheduled at Mount Burr this month.
Millicent police officer in charge Senior Sergeant First Class Rick Errington said there were five main factors which contribute to road trauma.
He said the so-called “fatal five” continue to be drink and drug driving, speeding, failing to wear seatbelts, distraction by using items such as mobile phones and vulnerable road users.
Sen Sgt Errington said local resources would be boosted by members of the Limestone Coast Highway Patrol, while Adelaide-based police would be in the region for the Triple J One Night Stand at Lucindale on September 14.
“Police are very concerned about the rise in the road toll and that this why you have seen a lot more of the police on the roads,” he said.
“We will be undertaking drug and alcohol testing of drivers and this will still be done in inclement weather.
“Police urge motorists to drive to the conditions of the road.”
