THE efforts of several Limestone Coast volunteers were recognised yesterday as part of National Meals on Wheels day.
The not-for-profit organisation has been active in South Australia since 1954, with the food delivery service empowering people to remain independent in their own homes.
Volunteers gathered at the organisation’s Mount Gambier centre yesterday to cook up a feast for the region’s clients, with a new offering of choices to celebrate the significant day.
It coincides with the release of the organisation’s recipe book which is an online resource designed to help meet the nutritional needs of elderly people.
Mount Gambier branch support officer Lisa Fewins said volunteers currently serve around 170 clients in the region.
“We have 220 volunteers and around 170 clients but on average we would love to have more volunteers to help ease the load,” Ms Fewins said.
“Our volunteers serve around 2500 meals per week which equals out to around 30,000 meals per year.”
While well supported by volunteers, Ms Fewins said the organisation would always welcome more.
“The more people we have volunteering, whether it be delivery, the office or kitchen, would allow some of the regulars to take some time out for themselves.”
The Mount Gambier branch services the broader Limestone Coast, also offering frozen meal delivery or pick-up options, while special menu changes are made around holidays.
“Around Christmas our volunteers put together a little hamper pack for our clients,” Ms Fewins said.
“We then deliver more homemade food which is very unique to the Mount Gambier branch.”
The branch is preparing for a presentation dinner on October 10 to further recognise its volunteers.
“All volunteers are welcome to come along and if anyone is interested in volunteering they are more than welcome to come down and have a chat,” Ms Fewins said
