WHEN diagnosed with cancer around half a decade ago, Lorraine Musgrove turned to the Mt Gambier Cancer Support Group Inc for support.
Now the group’s chairperson, the Mount Gambier resident is proud to help deliver similar support to people on their own physical and emotional journeys.
“Not all clients require the same support, but we are there no matter what,” Ms Musgrove said.
“Whether it be financial support, travel expenses, a simple phone call or even information, we are there.
“Cancer can be a tough time for many different reasons and the group aims to limit those pressures.”
More than 20 community members gathered at the city’s Naval Association Clubrooms on Monday for the group’s annual lunch, reflecting on its service to the region since founded by the late Rhonda Phillips in 1981.
A member for many years beforehand, Ms Musgrove was caught by surprise with her own cancer diagnosis, turning to the group for emotional support.
“I was lucky as I did not have to travel and was able to undergo surgery and treatment here but that is not always the case.
“I am still here today and I will continue to help people like the group supported me.”
With close connections to other community organisations, Ms Musgrove said Monday’s annual gathering provided a social outlet for members and supporters.
“We want to focus on fun and something separate from our monthly discussion meetings,” she said.
“It is also about thanking our volunteers and those we work closely with.
“All funding we receive helps us tremendously and every cent counts, no matter whether a donation is big or small.”
Ms Musgrove said the lunch also highlighted stories of others experiencing similar challenges in their lives.
“I am pleased to feel a sense of satisfaction as I know we are out there helping people in the community,” she said.
“There is no criteria as we support everybody.
“It is not only about helping the client, but also family, friends and associated community members.”
Ms Musgrove thanked the community and business sector for thr generous support of the organisation.
