REIDY Park Primary School students will search for the missing green sheep and cast spells with possum magic at Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre tonight as part of their highly anticipated bi-annual production.

Performing A Tribute to Mem Fox, Reception and Year 1 students will celebrate the famous Australian author, while tying in some of Australia’s most iconic songs.

Crafting their own costumes and learning their lines, reception teacher Donna Winckel said students were excited the day had finally arrived.

“Two years ago we ran a Dr Seuss theme and it proved successfully engaging for the students,” Ms Winckel said.

“We thought Mem Fox was a well-known author among the younger students and would also encourage reading among the younger students.

“Linking the production to the correct books which are age-appropriate seemed effective and those who had not read the books were eager to pick them after.”

Ms Winckel said the production was not only fun, but also helped the students improve their confidence, vocabulary and organisation skills.

“It sparks enthusiasm for the students and keeps them engaged with learning,” she said.

“Although it has been a long journey, I have definitely seen development in all curricular activities, not just in their performing arts.”

Ms Winckel said she hoped the production would stay with students for a long time.

“When I spoke with the older students, they said they do seem to remember all the productions they have been involved in,” she said.

“We also hope we encourage students to pick up a book and read and it ties in nicely with Book Week which is arriving in just a few weeks.”

The sold-out show will be held tonight at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.
