SEASONAL CHANGE: The Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre’s opening times will change as work on the Community and Recreation Hub begins.

THE Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre will end its 2019/20 swim season one month earlier than usual in preparation for the multi-million dollar Community and Recreation Hub development.

The outdoor Olympic swimming pool – which City Council last week announced would undergo a $1.7m facelift – will remain closed for the 2020/21 season until the redevelopment has been completed, expected to be in late 2021.

Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said council understood the inconvenience of the early closure to the community, however she said it was a “necessary transition period”.

“The new facility will be worth the wait and will provide indoor climate controlled aquatics facilities accessible to the public all year round,” Ms Martin said.

“It will include a learn to swim pool, children’s water splash and play area as well as a 25-metre pool and a warm water pool in addition to the outdoor 50-metre pool.”

With the centre being used by the wider community, council is working alongside leisure management director Peter Collins to minimise disruption with developmental works.

“Swimming lessons will be as normal in term four this year and we are currently working through how to best deliver programming during term one next year,” Mr Collins said.

“We will keep schools and the public informed as decisions are made.”

Department for Education and Childhood Development education director Adam Box said schools would work “proactively” with leisure management over the coming months.

“We understand there might be disruption to normal swimming programs,” Mr Box said.

“All schools in the area are eagerly awaiting the new hub and what this will provide for students.”

Fees and charges for season passes are expected to be adjusted accordingly for the shorter swimming season.
